This is a picture of the ½ scale electric hummer built in 2006 by the seniors. Currently the top speed of the vehicle is 20 mph, and has a range of 15 miles. Solar panels on the roof charge two accessory batteries, and the solar array on the school charges large battery bank. Thank you to the businesses and individuals from the community who made this project possible.
This is another engineering project which was completed in 2009 by the senior class. They designed and built 4 solar arrays with 8 panels per array which produce 1.44 KW. First Solar donated all of the Photovoltaic Cells, $12,000. Heidtman Steel provided a $10,000 donation which allowed us to purchase material for the mounting system created by the students. These arrays are grid tied and currently producing power for the school.
The Wind Turbine was completely assembled and installed by the senior class of 2010. The turbine is functional and produces energy when the wind reaches a speed of 8 mph. The maximum output of the generator is 3KW. Occasionally the turbine will shut down if the wind reaches 40mph. High winds could cause the device to self destruct without this safety feature. This project is also tied to the schools electrical grid and does reduce the schools cost on electricity. Funding for the project was secured through a $10,000 grant from BP. The turbine is located on north side of the building at the top of the hill.
